About

The RunforAmma raises funds for targeted cancer research, specifically for the UCSF BRCA Center at the Helen Diller Cancer Center/Ashworth Lab. In the BRCA center, scientists and clinicians work together to understand hereditary tumors caused by mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene, which consists of many ovarian, breast and gastrointestinal tumors.

The Run for Amma is dedicated to Champa Seshadri, affectionately known as “Amma” [mother] to everyone.

Amma was diagnosed with late stage peritoneal cancer in 2006. This rare form of cancer led to initial prognoses that ranged from pessimistic to hopeless. What the doctors did not know was that Amma’s life force was still burning strong. Initial treatment included surgery and a massive round of chemotherapy. Times were tough for her and her extended family.

Miraculously, Amma came out of the initial round of chemo with her spirits up and ready to live a full life. After 5̶9̶ 6̶0̶ 62 rounds of chemo, she survived with the love and support of her friends and family.

Amma passed away peacefully at our home in Sunnyvale, California at 9:27pm on Sunday March 4, 2012.
Amma’s spirit and kindness will live on all of the lives that she has touched.
